3 out of 5 stars A stylish case for the New iPad, with minor flaws
Michael M.

I purchased this case direct from Case-Mate because I wanted it in black (which Amazon does not carry). I am using it with a New iPad (aka iPad 3 or 3rd gen). Overall I am happy with this case, but it does have some minor flaws. The good:* The "smart cover" definitely works. I think the reviewer who said it didn't got a bad one. It puts my iPad to sleep when I close it, and it wakes it up when I open it. It also gives you the "typing" and "viewing" positions just like Apple's Smart Cover.* The texture is very nice. It's not leather, but it looks and feels great, and it seems well made.* The adhesive that holds the iPad in place is surprisingly strong, but not so much that I was not able to re-position the iPad a few times (see below). The minor flaws:* The iPad is not protected on the sides at all - it just sort of floats there. There are other cases out there that will do a better job protecting your iPad from a fall.* I had to re-position the iPad in the case a few times to get it to line up perfectly with the camera hole in the back, and so that the front cover would line up with the back cover when the case is closed.* When using the cover as a stand in "viewing" mode (steep angle), the setup feels a bit flimsy. It is pretty easy to tip the iPad over if you press on the top hard enough. (This may be common to all "smart cover" type cases, though, so I don't hold it against this case in particular.)* There have been a few instances where the front cover, when folded all the way back at a specific angle, will trigger the magnetic sleep function by accident. This is easy enough to avoid, though.Read more ›

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.... Pics do not do it justice

I ordered the grey case and it looks very premium. I'm using it now on the new iPad and can confirm the sleep/wake function DOES work! I upgraded cases from the Apple Smart Cover to this and I feel I absolutely made the best decision, and now I have protection on the back.If you're considering the Apple Smart Cover... Know that I feel the extra money is worth this Tuxedo case. I've owned both and the quality on this one is much better.I will take some pictures of it tonight so everyone can see how good it looks since they don't show much of the grey color in the product video.

4 out of 5 stars If you're a minimalist...

Since I'm 100% with Mr. Marcus who reviewed below, I won't repeat same things again. Only a thing I would like to add is consider this case if you're a minimalist. I mostly keep all Apple products without heavy cases around because I pay for their design as well. So it doesn't make sense to cover them in my taste. This is first time I own an iPad (new iPad) and it's not same feeling as other small handheld devices such as iPhone and iPod when I use it. So I was considering protective film on it as other devices I owned because most iPad cases out there were too much for me. Then I found this case from Youtube reviewer. I thought this case might be a good one without hurting iPad's own look. So I gave it a shot before protective film. So far I like most of it. But I would like to say if you want good protection around your iPad, this wouldn't make you happy. You would still need some extra effort not to scratch your ipad, especially on side as the other reviewer mentioned. It may not give absolute protection from drops either.I only highly recommend this case, If you are a very careful person with your device who need minimal protection without hurting Apple design. Otherwise, this would be an over-priced case for you with huge disappointment.Update (4/25/2012): I bought another one for 2nd iPad a few week later. Once I got the 2nd case, I realized that the first case is more flimsy than 2nd one that causes much more tip over in standing position. I contacted the seller and they responded within 24 hours. They asked me to send it back for exchange but I was told to send it back with my own cost and recommended to put insurance on it, of course with own cost as well. I'm not saying their customer service is bad but people definitely would expect better than this out of $60 case like this.

5 out of 5 stars I love it

I have been research for the iPad case for couple of weeks. Then I decided to buy this product because it look slim, sleek and sophisticated. It turn out that I am right about it. This case didn't take away the ipad slim look. I really love it and I recommend it to others. You will not regret it.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty. Liked it at first, but I now have concerns.

I originally bought the Apple Smart Cover for my iPad 3, but was disappointed with it for a number of reasons:1. The cover comes off too easily. The magnet hinges do an adequate job of holding it on, but if you grip it for any reason, it pulls off the iPad.2. The iPad is very slick, so having something to grip (like a folded cover) is helpful to me. Couldn't do this (see #1).3. I wanted something to cover the back, due to the iPad's slickness, and the Smart Cover only covers the front.4. The edges of the iPad are very thin and, frankly, bother my hands, so I wanted something to pad out the grip, which the Smart Cover can't do, but the Case-Mate can.I looked at 1/2 dozen cases, and this one seemed to match my criteria:1. Needs to be thin. It is. It doesn't bulk up the iPad.2. Needs to help with slickness. The Case-Mate has a nicely textured front and back which aids in gripping and when the cover is folded back, I can use it for a handle.3. Wanted the smart activation to work. Reading online, a number of cases recently released don't perform this function correctly for the new iPad (iPad 3).4. Need to attach in an unobtrusive fashion. Now, I know this will be a subject of controversy, but I find the reusable, sticky tape that adheres the back of the iPad to the back of the case works very well. It holds well, and the iPad can be easily removed if needed without leaving "gunk" on the back of the iPad.5. Easy access to ports and buttons. Just about as easy on the Case-Mate as the naked iPad.6. Must be attractive or at least not ugly. For my original iPad, I had the original black case, which worked very well and was only moderately unattractive.Read more ›
